Feast: Today we celebrate the feast of the two most famous disciples of Jesus – St Peter and St Paul. According to early tradition both of them were martyred in Rome and this has been honoured from the very beginning of Christianity. Peter a Galilean, was married and a fisherman chosen by Jesus to be his disciple. After Simon confessed that Jesus was the Christ, Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter and told him that it was on this rock that he would build his church. After the Ascension Peter was referred to as, “Chief of the Apostles.” Paul was born in Tarsus 2000 years ago. He was a Roman citizen who was educated as a Pharisee. When he experienced the risen Jesus he converted from a zealous persecutor of Christians, to be an equally dedicated Apostle. Paul called himself the Apostle to the Gentiles. This month is the beginning of a special Jubilee year to celebrate the 2000th Anniversary of St Paul’s birth.

Friday is the First Friday of the month.  Confessions are 1.30 and 5.30pm. Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament will be from 10am – 7.30pm.

Feasts of the Week:   Tuesday - St Oliver Plunkett bishop and martyr. Oliver was from Irish nobility and his family supported King Charles 1. He was ordained in Rome in 1654 and appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669. It was a difficult time politically and priests were not allowed to minister. So Oliver secretly practiced as a priest and bishop. He was found guilty of high treason and was martyred on the 1st July 1681 at Tyburn where he was hung, drawn and quartered. His head is in St Peters Church Drogheda. Most of his body is at Downside Abbey in England.

Thursday - St Thomas, Apostle. He is said to have preached the Gospel in India where he was martyred. The faith that led him to know Jesus Christ in his wounds also sent him to the farthest places to preach Christ.
